Retort Pouches: Transforming the Food Packaging Industry

 What Exactly Are Retort Pouches?

Heat-resistant laminated plastic retort pouches are semi-rigid and flexible packaging. Foods such as soups, pasta, rice, sauces, and dishes prepared in sachets are sealed and sterilized in these sachets at a maximum temperature of 121 ° C. This makes it the first choice for ready-to-eat, processed and prepackaged foods.

The idea for retort pouches was sponsored by the US Army in 1950 and research continued until 1960. It was eventually invented by the US Army Research and Development Command. Company and Continental Flexible Packaging, and was first introduced in Italy. These companies received the Industrial Achievement Award in Food Technology in 1978 for their invention. These pouches initially stalled because people refused to accept them. However, over the years, manufacturers and companies have recognized that there are many advantages to using retort pouches for packaging. We will discuss some of them later in the article.

 The Inside Matters

If we praise the quality of the packaging of the retort pouches, it is for its internal structural composition. It has the strength of metal cans and protects the nutritional value of food. Specifically, each pouch is made up of four layers, and these are:

The first layer is made of propylene, which acts as a heat sealable surface, adding strength and flexibility.

The next layer, which is the nylon layer, protects against abrasion.

The aluminum layer not only protects against light, gases, and odors but also prolongs the life of the product.

The polyester topcoat offers excellent strength and is very easy to print.

The materials used to package the retort pouches are FDA approved and undergo sterilization processes that increase the shelf life of the package.

How Do Retort Pouches Save the Day?

While these pouches offer many advantages, here are the main advantages that turn the tables in favor of retort pouches:

1. Well designed

Sturdy packaging protects these pouches during transport. Due to their low weight, they are also very inexpensive to transport. They easily withstand temperature variations of up to 250 degrees and are waterproof.

2. Efficient use of resources

Retort pouches only use 5% of the packaging material while enhancing the texture, taste, and aroma of food. In addition, much less energy is used in the production of these pouches than in the production of metal, paper, or glass containers. They are made of high-quality materials and are respectful of the environment.

3. Space-saving

The retort pouches can be placed upright on the shelves, which helps to keep the composition of the food inside. In addition, they are flat and therefore take up little space on the shelf or in shopping pouches.

All of the above advantages combined make retort pouches an ideal packaging, especially in the food and beverage industry.
